OKLAHOMA CITY - The OKCPS Athletics department is excited to announce a brand new series - the “Beyond the Game - Student-Athlete Spotlight”. In this one-of-a-kind showcase, different student-athletes across the district will be featured in an exclusive interview series with Executive Director of Athletics, Shane Sanders.
These selected student-athletes not only shine in their respected sports, but their impact in the classroom and in the community, create memorable stories for us to tell. In the inaugural “Student-Athlete Spotlight” we head to the Southside to highlight one of the sharpest young men in the district, senior Hernan Terrazas from Southeast High School.
“One of my favorite quotes about my high school experience is from Dr. Seuss.” said Terrazas in one of his first discussions with the district athletic office. “You never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.”
Hernan Terrazas will have quite a few memories to take with him as he graduates from Southeast later this Spring. A three-year starter on the Spartans’ football team, Terrazas is also a member of the National Honor Society at Southeast. His GPA is a 4.0 which means he will be graduating in a white robe in May. On the football field, Hernan was a force to be reckoned with on the offensive line, as he was tabbed the All-City Athletic Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year after a sensational season in the trenches.
Terrazas recently signed his letter of intent to continue playing football at the next level in college at the University of Central Oklahoma.
In addition to his outstanding accomplishments on the field, Terrazas also represented Southeast High School this year by serving on OKCPS Superintendent Dr. Jamie Polk’s Student Leadership Council.
“That experience was truly invaluable. It allowed myself and other students in the district to get into rooms with highly influential people that we wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to.” said Terrazas. “Dr. Polk is so supportive of the students of OKCPS, and getting to serve on the council and hearing her insights was a truly awesome experience.”
To conclude the exclusive interview with Mr. Sanders, Hernan spoke about the district athletic office’s hashtags “Next Play. Next Step.” and what that means to him.
“It’s all about figuring out what you want to do after high school. Everyone is going to pursue different goals and aspirations, but how you prepare yourself is what makes all the difference.”
